Antioxidant and anti-aging effect of water extract from mixture including Zingiberis rhizome and Zizyphi fructus

Abstract
Objectives : In modern society, interest in anti-aging cosmetics and antioxidant functional foods that can prevent aging of skin as well as life style related diseases is also increasing. So, this study was conducted to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-aging effects of herbal mixture extract (YYBNB), including Zingiberis rhizoma and Zizyphi fructus.

Methods : Total polyphenol contents and total flavonoid contents in YYBNB were determined by colorimetric method. Also, ABTS, DPPH free radical scavenging capacity and reducing power were measured for antioxidant capacity of YYBNB. In addition, elastase and collagenase inhibition activities of YYBNB were checked at 100, 500, 1,000, 5,000 §¶ / §¢ concentrations by spectrometric assay.

Results : The total flavonoid contents and total polyphenol contents of YYBNB were 704.9 mg/RUEg, 40.9 mg/TAEg, respectively. And DPPH, ABTS free radical scavenging capacity of YYBNB at 1,000, 5,000 §¶ / §¢ was similar to BHA at 50, 100 §¶/ §¢. Also, efficacy of YYBNB at 5000 §¶ / §¢ was showed to similar to BHA levels at 50, 100 §¶ / §¢ on reducing power.

Conclusions : These results suggest that YYBNB has effect to scavenge free radicals. Therefore, YYBNB can be used as a material for antioxidant products.
